REIKI, PART I: THE BEGINNING

[If you are unfamiliar with the term “Reiki,” I suggest you do just a bit of google research on this topic, so you have a general idea. I will not be getting into what Reiki is exactly, and you might be confused or have lots of questions about it, which might distract you from everything else I will be discussing in this post.

Here is a good place to start: https://www.reiki.org/faq/whatisreiki.html

Please pay close attention to the following paragraph, as it holds the most relevancy with regards to what I intend to share: “An amazingly simple technique to learn, the ability to use Reiki is not taught in the usual sense, but is transferred to the student during a Reiki class. This ability is passed on during an ‘attunement’ given by a Reiki master and allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of ‘life force energy’ to improve one’s health and enhance the quality of life.”]

My twin sister was trained as a Reiki master, which means that she can give Reiki treatments and attunements, and teach Reiki to others. I never really had any interest in following this path, but I always thought it was super cool that she did. I also took every opportunity to ask her for Reiki healing treatments whenever I felt something in my body might be off. Over the years, I have experienced many healing treatments from her and have always been amazed by the power and effectiveness of this energy.

In January of 2016, days after the turn of the New Year, I asked her to give me my first Reiki attunement. I was not interested in becoming a Reiki master or learning how to give Reiki treatments. Instead, I was feeling very off, very negative, very weighed down (at the time I was actually about 20 lbs. heavier than I am now, the most I have ever weighed), and felt like I needed some kind of deeper and more divinely oriented change, that I somehow knew I was unable to give to myself.

[If you have done your Reiki research, you will know that in order to be trained in Reiki, you must receive an attunement. However, a person can receive an attunement as a healing treatment even if they are not pursuing Reiki training.]

A typical Reiki healing session is kind of like a spot treatment for something acute. A Reiki attunement, however, is more like a complete physical and spiritual overhaul, like a revamp.

She gave me my attunement (I did not feel any differently as I received the treatment and just sat quietly, kind of bored, until she was done), and afterwards she said that I might notice some changes in the next 30 days. She did not specify what kinds of changes I might experience but said to simply pay attention and just kind of go with it. A Reiki attunement is basically an occasion for the body to receive higher healing energy. And if a body is full of a lot of gunk (physically and/or energetically), then the body and the incoming energy will “make space” for the new energy in order to bring the body into alignment, so it is more fit to receive.

My body’s “making space” for this energy consisted of shitting liquid, on and off yet steadfastly, for the entire month of January. I know this sounds kind of terrible, but it actually was not all that bad once I got used to it. I also inherently knew that this was a result of the attunement, so I found it quite fascinating and did not panic or worry that something was horribly wrong with me. All in all, the experience was fairly gentle, as far as shitting liquid goes, and it got to be the norm for a bit. It also completely forced me to change my diet, because I did have a bit of stomach upset on occasion. Obviously, I lost a fair amount of weight, and I am guessing through this process, my metabolism altered drastically as well. Since then have not struggled in any way to maintain my current weight.

Left: Me having a rough day and seeking comfort by hugging a gigantic stuffed animal in a crowded store, just before the holidays. Center: Me spending time in nature, in the midst of my liquification. Right: Not sure what I am doing here, but it is safe to say that by this time I was feeling much better overall.

From my experience, I deeply believe that if you invite Reiki into your life, in any deliberately conscious way, things begin to happen to you. For the most part, a person who is fairly capable of navigating his or her own life can generally make things happen for him or herself. Things do not always go as planned, and mistakes and surprises are always part of life. But a person still has a great amount of influence over the outcome of his or her situation, based on personal choices, thoughts, actions, etc. However, for me, when I have allowed Reiki into my life, what has always followed has been a string of events that seem to happen TO me, and not from a victim standpoint, but more from a divinely directed origination. Asking for Reiki is essentially a surrender. And once we surrender, we cannot help but be taken by its gentle force.

Several significant events took place in the months following my attunement, all of which were very powerful, life-altering, and quite natural.

  • June 2016   ♥   After having gone for many years without having much success with men, dating, and relationships, I truly believed I was a hopeless case, imprisoned for life by my own fears. Six months after my attunement I entered into a relationship with someone and have never felt less terrified during the process (dating and relationships normally terrify me completely). It was natural, easy, and very positive, and I overcame many long-held fears and blocks during this experience. Granted, the relationship ended for very, very, very good reasons. But I was effortlessly led through my seemingly impenetrable blocks of stagnation through this experience and have had much more of a fearless flow in the dating world ever since.
  • August 20, 2016   ♥   After ending this relationship, I felt guided towards yoga. I had never really been interested in yoga, but I followed my “need” for it and came upon a sacred studio just minutes from my home. My first class was with the beautiful, powerful, amazing Alexis Strizziere, and her energy and her incredible class took hold of me very deeply. From there I began my yoga path and have continued to benefit from this powerful tool. Yoga moved my body and my heart through this difficult relationship ending and sent me on a trajectory towards an even higher level of self-healing and love of self.
  • October 2016   ♥   A significant relationship with a dear girlfriend dissolved. Our friendship had many facets of dysfunction and codependency, and ultimately, I do not believe the friendship was healthy for either goddess. However, we had been tightly bound for many years. Then, as if in a whisper without words, we parted. I hope she is well.

Painting I completed in November 2016, giving closure to the loss of the romantic relationship from earlier that year. Typically, once I paint about it, it is out of my system for good.

In December of 2016, I entered another phase of healing which more closely relates to the Reiki training that I have just recently received (June 2018). Therefore, I will begin with this story of healing in REIKI, PART II: ROOT CHAKRA HEALING, and will take you on my Reiki journey up until now.
