[I will preface this post by saying that baths are good for detox as well, but it is important to consider the power of water flow, rather than soaking in a stagnant pool. This post is about detox showers only; and although this does not discount the healing effects of the bath, I do think the element of water flow experienced from a shower, is something to keep in mind as you read this post.]
I had a taxing day several days ago and felt quite exhausted by the end of it. Situations resolved and all was well, but I felt very drained and kind of negative. Often when I feel this way in the evenings, I take a detox shower. This is different than taking a shower to wash my hair and bathe. I actually make it a point not to wash my hair during a detox shower. Washing my hair is sort of a pain, and this particular kind of shower is for pleasure, not for pain.
Let me begin by specifying that it is very important to invest in a shower filter. The purpose of a detox shower is defeated if you are allowing chlorine-laced liquid to wash over your body and infect your pours with poison. I discuss the importance of this in a previous post, SMOOTH SKIN FOR THE EVERYDAY GODDESS. Most of our water is contaminated in some way. Unfortunately, even if you are living in the Adirondacks (okay, maybe you are fine if you live there), you can bet that some toxins are invading your water. So, scoot on down to the Home Depot the next time you are out running errands and pick up a shower filter. They last six months and are totally inexpensive.
THE POWER OF WATER
The element of water is quite powerful and connects to our emotions, as well as our bodies. Over time, its gentle flow (although sometimes its flow can be downright violent) can cut through lands and smooth away rough and stony edges to form beautiful globes of solid earthen rock. The Grand Canyon is an example of this process on a massive scale.
Think of the power of water in this world. The water wheel is a genius, environmentally friendly invention. It harnesses the force of water’s natural flow to generate motion that can power mills, run machines, and even generate electricity. And it never, ever stops, breaks, or craps out. Water never gets tired, it just keeps flowing.
Water, in spiritual terms, represents emotions, surrender, flow, femininity, purity, and transformation. It makes sense then, that stepping into and under the flow of water can have a powerful effect on your mind, body, and soul. I can be tied up in knots over an emotionally distressful situation, and emerge from a detox shower with newfound feelings of hope, calm, balance, and confidence. A detox shower is like hitting the reset button for yourself. It is a brilliantly gentle way to “snap out of it” without having to snap, slap, jerk, or push any part of yourself.
HOW TO TAKE A DETOX SHOWER
So, how do you take a detox shower and how is it different from a normal shower that you have to take every day? Keep in mind that a detox shower automatically assumes that you may be taking two showers in one day. A detox shower has nothing to do with bathing, or cleansing, or have-to’s. At times for me, having to take a shower can feel like a bit of a chore. But this is not that. Think of this more as a vehicle of transformation. Almost like stepping into a time machine or through a space portal. A detox shower has nothing to do with daily rituals, habits, or requirements.
SMELL ALL THE SMELLS
I am a product mama and I love beauty products. Often, I go out of my way to experience both new and already discovered scents and smells. It is imperative that your detox shower involve some kind of product with a scent that is pleasing to you. This shower is about transportation, rather than function, and nothing transports your soul more expeditiously than fragrance. Scent preference is a very personal thing and I do not begin to assume that you will have the same tastes as I do when it comes to smells. However, if you are curious, here are a few of this goddess’s favorite shower specific indulgent products:

I have used each of these products on a regular basis over the years. And the scent and overall effect of their existence in my life has earned them a treasured location in the pleasure center of my brain, there to remain for all eternity. I also continue to go back to these products, time after time, even as I introduce fresh bouquets into my indulgence regimen.
Another aspect of a detox shower is the temperature. Everyone has different preferences in terms of water temp, but in general, a detox shower should be warm to hot. Cold water rushing over human flesh is good for some things. This can be perfect for invigorating yourself in the morning, or cooling off in the midst of a panic attack. For some reason, when I am feeling panicked, a hot shower tends to augment the symptoms of my panic. So, switching to cold water in the midst of my frenzy, usually has an instant panic-halting effect, bringing down a fever, and cooling off after a workout. But with a detox shower, it is assumed that you are entering into this process, not in a state of panic or over-excitement, but in a state of exhaustion, overload, toxicity, emotional depression or depletion, and fragility. It is important to note the difference. And in this state of fragility, warm to hot water has a soothing, nurturing, deeply restorative effect; almost like returning to a womb of comfort, cradled in the flowing energy of hot, liquid love.

THE LENGTH OF A DETOX SHOWER
There is no required amount of time to stay in a detox shower. But, you should definitely give yourself and your body enough time to melt into a state of relaxed serenity. For me, this takes at least ten to fifteen minutes. As with all things related to emotions, bodily health, and transformation, it takes time. Longer than we usually expect. And our body and mind cannot shift from a lower state to a higher state without a smooth and gentle transition. Five minutes under some hot water might have some kind of positive effect on your system. But ten minutes is better. Fifteen is guaranteed to transform. You be the judge.
One note of caution: When you are in your hot detox shower–or basically whenever you are taking a hot shower–avoid putting your beautiful, goddess face directly under the fire-y stream of H2O. This can feel sensationally pleasing, and we may suspect that this action is doing a fine job of washing away the dirt and dinge from the day; but our facial skin is much more delicate than the skin on the rest of our body, and hot water pelleting our face can cause irritation, excess dryness and blood vessel ruptures. Instead, let your hands fill with hot water and then splash this over your face. This process cools down the water temperature and is much gentler for your delicate demeanor.
Another note: If you have been having trouble with your sleep, waking up in the middle of the night, and/or are disrupted by disturbing dreams, try a detox shower just before bedtime and measure how your sleep and dreams improve.
ENJOY AND REPEAT!
Detox showers are powerful and effective. Use as needed. And if you find that you are having to take a detox shower every evening, you might want to reexamine certain life circumstances that are causing this level of stress. It is difficult to live the life of a goddess if you are miserable, tired, stressed, anxious, negative, drained, and exhausted on a regular basis. But even goddesses go through downward cycles, and when I am in an evening rut, I swear by this self-loving, purifying, supremely enjoyable, transformative ritual, and extend my wisdom to all goddesses in need.
