I recently signed up for an online course on reading tarot cards, and I’m seriously loving it. I mentioned a bit about this in my recent article, “The Things I’m Focusing On Now, Other Than Men.” And this course, along with the other million things I’ve been doing to try to stay sane, has been so helpful in my breakup healing process. It’s helping me to keep busy and it’s getting me excited about new possibilities.
There are so many tarot teachers out there, and I trust in the process of going with what feels natural and right for you. I didn’t plan on taking any formal lessons in reading tarot cards. But my best friend introduced me to an amazing podcast by Lindsay Mack. And from there, he shared with me how he had signed up for one of her courses. Also around this time, she was offering a massive special discount on her course, and I just decided to take it. Because I was feeling so connected to her and was just really enjoying her podcast. It happened organically and naturally. And I think something as divinely spiritual as the practice of reading tarot cards should unfold in just this way.
A BIT ABOUT READING TAROT CARDS
Let me start off by saying that I’m super new to this. However, I have very close friends who have been reading tarot cards for years. And I have been given HUNDREDS of tarot card readings by these dear friends, in a safe and fun environment. So, I have been exposed to tarot for quite some time.
I only started giving readings in the last few years. And let me just tell you, no matter who you are, when you first begin, it feels super awkward. You can feel really insecure and not sure if what you’re even doing and saying is “right” or makes sense. And reading tarot cards takes a tremendous amount of confidence in yourself and your intuitive abilities.
Luckily, I did have a bit of confidence in my intuitive gifts before I gave my first reading. And it made all the difference to take my first stab at reading with my twin sister and my best friend. Both of them felt very comfortable in their own abilities. And both of them had so much confidence in MY abilities. They were encouraging and validating, and it turns out, I do have something to offer in this area!
EVERYONE HAS THEIR OWN STYLE OF READING
I thought of this analogy the other day when I was trying to explain astrology readings to a friend of mine who had no idea about any of it. And I explained that giving readings is kind of an art (I don’t mean to sound pretentious, just stick with me!!!). Compare the tarot cards that are pulled in a reading to a landscape, and imagine the tarot card reader is the artist, attempting to interpret the landscape with paint. Every reader sees the same cards in front of them, and every artist sees the same landscape. However, each reader, and each artist, is going to interpret what they see in a different way. Some artists have a bold style, and other artists prefer to translate their landscape abstractly. It’s the same for reading tarot cards.
For me, I actually learned from the first reading I gave to my sister and bestie, that my style of reading is a reflection of how I receive the information. And the way I tend to receive the information is through visuals and feelings. For instance, when I pull a tarot card, I find that I have to look at the card itself and start decoding the colors, the shapes, and the imagery. And I just need to start talking (big surprise there!). When I start talking, I actually don’t know where I’m going to end up. I just have to trust in myself. And then, as I start to describe what I’m seeing, I start to feel all kinds of things. Thoughts and often emotions begin to rise up as I speak. And that tends to be reflected in my style of reading tarot cards.
SO, DO YOU WANT TO HELP ME PRACTICE READING TAROT CARDS?
If you follow me on Instagram @thegoddessattainable you may have caught a recent reel of mine, where I opened up the channels and invited anyone interested to DM me with a question.
I would like to extend the same offer to you! That is, if you send me a question, I will pull one tarot card and share with you a mini-interpretation of the guidance being offered. You also don’t need to ask a specific question. And I can just pull a card and see what comes up for you.
In exchange, I invite any and all truthful (yes, this includes constructive criticism!) feedback. Your feedback helps me to learn!
I also welcome your donations of thanks via Venmo @libbysaylor. You can also find me on Paypal @libbysaylor, or use this PayPal quick link. If you pay with PayPal, please use the “Friends and Family” option in order to avoid fees. If you feel inspired to give in this way, I so appreciate your contribution!
So far, I’ve received a handful of inquiries and have been loving the feedback! It’s been so validating, and giving the mini-readings has been feeling so right and rewarding!
So, if this is something that feels interesting to you, I welcome any and all opportunities to give you a mini-reading. You can DM me on Instagram. Or, if you don’t have Instagram, you can email me (thegoddessattainable at gmail dot com) with a question or a request to pull a general, question-less card. I typically record a short video and send that to you as a response. I can also write out a response if that feels more natural.
A FEW THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND
If you are not very familiar with tarot, I would like to share a few ground rules to keep in mind. These are good schools of thought if and when you ever receive any kind of guidance of this variety.
1. IT IS BEST TO STAY AWAY FROM YES OR NO QUESTIONS. TAROT CARD READERS ARE NOT FORTUNE TELLERS AND CANNOT PREDICT THE FUTURE FOR YOU. THEY ARE ALSO NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR HELPING YOU MAKE BIG LIFE DECISIONS. THAT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.
2. THINK OF THE PERSON READING TAROT CARDS AS A CHANNEL OF COMMUNICATION. IF YOU DON’T LIKE WHAT YOU HEAR, IT’S NOT THE READER’S FAULT. THE CARDS ARE WHAT THEY ARE, AND THE READER IS JUST THERE TO TRANSLATE.
3. TAKE EVERYTHING WITH A GRAIN OF SALT. TAROT CARD READINGS CAN BE SUPER BENEFICIAL AND HELPFUL, BUT THEY ARE ALSO JUST TAROT CARDS. IF YOU DON’T LIKE WHAT YOU HEAR IN A READING, DON’T SWEAT IT. AND CERTAINLY DON’T BLAME THE TAROT CARD READER. MOST READERS ARE DOING THIS AS AN ACT OF SERVICE, AND THEY ARE COMING FROM A PLACE OF LOVE, SO BE KIND.
4. TAKE WHAT YOU LIKE AND LEAVE THE REST. NO HUMAN BEING CAN PLAY GOD, NOT EVEN (AND ESPECIALLY) A TAROT CARD READER. SO, YOU MIGHT GET SOMETHING OUT OF A READING, AND SOME OTHER THINGS MIGHT NOT RESONATE WITH YOU. IT’S YOUR JOB TO MANAGE YOUR FEELINGS ABOUT YOUR READING.
5. HAVE FUN WITH IT! TAROT IS A FUN AND MEANINGFUL TOOL TO HELP YOU ON YOUR PATH. SO KEEP IT LIGHT, EVEN IF YOU ARE INQUIRING ABOUT HEAVIER TOPICS. IT’S ALL GOING TO BE OKAY, NO MATTER WHAT YOU HEAR IN A TAROT CARD READING. SO ENJOY IT AS BEST YOU CAN!
THANK YOU AND I LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING FROM YOU!
So, have you ever had a tarot card reading? Do you have any experience with reading tarot cards for others? I’d love to hear about your experiences! And most importantly, I would love the opportunity to practice reading for you! I thank you in advance for giving me the opportunity xoxox
