From my experience, the key to being happy at work is all about finding the right match. It’s kind of the same as finding a good relationship. You can work at it and improve yourself, reflecting and growing and changing along the way. However, if your partner sucks, or is just incapable of being decent, it really doesn’t matter what you do. And leaving becomes the best option for all parties involved. I do believe that the same is true for finding happiness at work. And it’s all about recognizing the warning signs.
WARNING SIGNS THAT YOU NEED TO LEAVE
If you don’t have a good relationship with your superior, it is going to be really difficult to be happy at work. Your superior is the one who is supposed to be there for you when you have an issue. They are supposed to support your growth and really champion you. Whomever you work for, literally the individual you answer to, must be a reasonable person. They should be kind to you, respectful, and ultimately, super supportive.
I feel like it’s ingrained in our culture that a mean and scary boss is just something that we all have to put up with. Why? Because they’re paying us? Because we are scum and work under them, so we need to just do whatever they tell us, even if it’s unreasonable, unfair, and abusive? Nope. Work is an exchange, yes. You are in some way serving your company and servicing your superiors. However, they are also serving you. They are supporting your life, offering you money and benefits (hopefully), and this should be a fair and even exchange.
If any of the following kinds of things have happened to you at work, you might need to consider leaving:
YOUR SUPERIOR OFTEN DOES NOT MAKE TIME FOR YOU WHEN YOU ASK
YOU ARE MADE TO FEEL GUILTY WHEN YOU ASK FOR TIME OFF, VACATION, OR SICK TIME
YOUR WORKLOAD IS INSANE AND YOU KNOW IN YOUR HEART, YOU ARE DOING THE WORK OF MORE THAN ONE PERSON
YOU ARE STRESSED OUT (MENTALLY, EMOTIONALLY AND/OR PHYSICALLY) MORE OFTEN THAN NOT
YOU GET THE SCARY SUNDAYS EVERY SINGLE SUNDAY
This week’s podcast episode is all about “Finding Peace At Work,” and I dive much deeper into this subject matter in the episode. I rehash an older blog post of mine regarding this topic, and also share some anecdotes and advice. I am lucky enough to have found a way to be happy at work. And I truly and deeply want this for everyone.
You won’t want to miss this episode! I would also love, love, love to hear what your experience with work has been so far. Do you have a mean and scary boss? Have you found a way to be happy at work? Are you still on this journey? Please share in the comments or write to me with your thoughts and experiences. You are so worth this happiness!
