I’m just going to get right to the point and tell you that I believe there is still time to save Mother Earth. I am listening to a podcast episode as we speak. And the episode has been so inspiring, that I felt called to begin a blog post before I have even finished the episode.
The podcast episode is hosted by Tami Simon of Insights at the Edge, produced by Sounds True. And the episode title is, “Calling Team Earth: Ending The Climate Crisis In One Generation”. Of course, if you are a remotely decent person, you have probably heard podcasts like this before, watched documentaries, and/or have educated yourself about this topic in some way. And if you don’t go around kicking puppies and doing terrible things to other human beings, you are also probably quite concerned about our climate crisis. I am too. And for whatever reason, this particular podcast episode lit a fire in my belly. And I now feel compelled to act in a more inspired and dedicated kind of way.
WE CAN SAVE MOTHER EARTH FROM THE INSIDE OUT
The guest on this podcast episode, Paul Hawken, has written several books about this topic. And I’m sure the books are great. I may even read one. However, I was most compelled by the way he talked about the climate crisis. He talked about it in a way that had more to do with people and behaviors. And what works and doesn’t work when it comes to human beings making great change. He was also quite refreshingly dismissive of the blame game. Every moment we blame is a moment lost. Basically, he made the point that it doesn’t much matter who’s fault this is. Where is blaming getting us? Nowhere, if we are not actually taking action. Blame often also makes us feel shameful and hopeless. Which he points out is the least inspiring way to motivate human beings.
Saving Mother Earth really does start with us as individuals. And people change because people change. If you think back on your life, you may notice that some of the greatest strides you’ve made in life were inspired by others around you. Perhaps it was your support group. Or maybe you were inspired by those around you, to NOT do what they did. Most of our life choices and daily decisions, in some way, are often based on other people, to some extent. So, what you do matters to others and can inspire dramatic change in those around you!
In 12-step programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous, a powerful tool for healing and change has to do with action. In meetings, people are often taught not to give any direct advice. But instead, to just be an example for others by the way you live. Then, people ultimately learn how to work the program by watching and becoming inspired by others who are setting powerful examples. If we allow ourselves to become inspired by the people around us, we can’t help but try to emulate their glory.
WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW TO SAVE MOTHER EARTH
It’s funny. One of the first blog posts I ever wrote back in 2017 was about saving the Earth. It was called, “Change The World By Changing A Light Bulb”. I admit, this is not the greatest blog article. I didn’t know what I was doing and was just sort of playing around with my blog, and freely expressing my thoughts. But, it goes to show that this is something that I’ve been stabbing at for years.
When I was in junior high school, I was in a club called K.A.R.E. (Kids Against Ruining the Earth). Honestly, the club was much more about having fun with other club members and going on trips. And I don’t know if we did much to help the cause. I say this because it’s super easy to jump on this wagon to save Mother Earth. And it’s also super easy to jump off. I’ve jumped on and off so many times. Because it’s hard to make lasting change in our lives. But, we just have to. We just must.
1. LISTEN TO THE PODCAST EPISODE
It’s very difficult to articulate all of the brilliant information that Paul Hawken shares in this episode. Therefore, I urge you as a first step to listen to: “Calling Team Earth: Ending The Climate Crisis In One Generation”.
2. BOOKMARK THE NEXUS AND USE IT REGULARLY
Paul Hawken also mentions a nexus that he has created on his website. This hub is the most comprehensive list of call to actions and information in existence. If you really, really want to make change, check out this site and use it regularly. It’s very overwhelming, so take your time with it. Every little bit helps. And remember, you want to adopt habits that will last. So make sure you explore avenues that you are naturally drawn to. This will make you more likely to stick to these changes.
I CAN’T TELL YOU EXACTLY HOW TO SAVE MOTHER EARTH
I am not going to tell you which actions to take, because I don’t know what’s best for you. All I can do is offer these resources, and hope you feel inspired to act. I can also share with you what I’m doing. But that is all. And I hope that’s enough for you to get started.
WHAT I HAVE DONE SO FAR
Since I haven’t even finished listening to the podcast episode yet, I haven’t done much. However, I do feel drawn to write to my financial institutions. Since these monsters are so super destructive, and since I care very much about where my money goes, I felt drawn to this topic. The Nexus offers very helpful information, statistics, and direction when it comes to contacting financial beasts. It turns out I bank with 2 of the top 5 most destructive global financial institutions. And while I’m not quite ready to move my money around, I did take the advice offered on the Nexus. And I sent a letter to the CEO of both Wells Fargo and Citigroup. I am pasting the verbiage I used below if you would like to use this for your own letter.
MY LETTER TO CITIGROUP
Dear Ms. Fraser,
I have been banking with Citigroup for roughly 10 years. I have never felt the need to change where I bank, but now I am asking for your help, as I would like to continue banking with Citi for many years to come.
It’s come to my attention that Citi has been financing $238 billion in fossil fuels globally since the Paris Agreement (2016–2020). Any educated person can deduce that climate change is real. The science is there and the experiential evidence is already becoming apparent in our everyday lives.
I plead with you to use your power to cease investing in or loaning to fossil fuels companies or companies that support drilling, mining, exploration, and extraction. There are ways to divest from fossil fuels, and this truly is the future.
Please also consider joining the Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials. This is a group of over one hundred financial institutions that collectively manage more than $21 trillion. They are committed to counting the greenhouse gas emissions underwritten by the financial industry. Many banks do not make emission information publicly available, but metrics can help hold companies accountable.
And finally, I ask that you begin to invest in renewables which offer better returns and help move us away from fossil fuels.
Please consider my request, and please expect continued pleas if things do not change.
With many thanks for your consideration,
I’M MAKING A COMMITMENT TO SLOW FASHION
I do actually already do much of this, but there is way more room for improvement. A few basic things to consider when committing to slow fashion are:
- Buy less and wear more
- Buy second-hand/thrift clothing
- Donate or give away unwanted garments
- If buying new, only buy clothing made with 100% natural fiber including: cotton, hemp, linen, silk, wool, and cashmere
The clothing industry can be really overwhelming. And now that corporations have caught on that shopping sustainably is trendy, they all have an angle. But it’s hard to know who to trust. So, from here on out, before I purchase an article of clothing, I want to check in with the Good On You Directory. They’ve done their research and rate clothing companies based on their environmental practices. Bookmark this site as well!
IF YOU LIVE IN INDIA
And last, but not least, if you live in India, you should support this goddess who is way ahead of the game in terms of action! Moksha of The Moksha Life is my dear blogging friend, and has also created a sustainable lifestyle brand. Please check out her site. And the next time you need any products for your home or your body, please consider purchasing from Moksha. I am not sponsored by this brand, and if I was living in India, I would buy these products! This is a new brand, so she is not yet selling in other countries. But that is coming, so for those of you in other parts of the world, keep her on your radar, and at least follow her on Instagram @the.moksha.life
THERE IS SO MUCH MORE TO DO
There is so much more that I could be doing. But again, blame, shame, and guilt, are a waste. Instead, I’m writing this blog post. and I hope it reaches you and so many others. My eyes are open and I want to keep changing. Hope is not lost. And remember, bringing emotions into it is just not as effective as taking action.
What actions are you going to take? Do you feel motivated to do more than you’re doing? Please share the podcast and Nexus links with others. What else can we do but try?! Our dearest Mama Earth is so damn worth it.
